More Parking Meter Increases

This week Mayor O'Brien and Councillors Wilkinson, Cullen, Bloess, McRae, & Thompson voted in favour to increase parking meter rates. The decision is to go to $3/hr on Mar. 1 & $3.25/hr on Oct. 1. The only compensation was given to not charge on Sundays & to charge until 7 instead of 9 pm on weekdays and Saturdays. This item goes to Council on Feb. 13.If REVENUE is derived from meters it should be directed to IMPROVING the supply of off street parking in areas that need it.

  • Parking is a service to business and customers not a budget/revenue toll. The regulation of parking is to ensure turnover for short term users during peak periods so parking capacity can be controlled - there is little or no need for evening or weekend enforcement. Please let your Ward Councillor know your views directly.

About Ottawa's BIAs

Ottawa BIAs
BIA stands for Business Improvement Area. The primary role of a BIA is to enhance the area it represents. Business people within a specific geographical location join together with the help of their municipality to improve the area through initiatives such as marketing and events and by protecting its interests in government and business arenas. Through their membership in the BIA, local businesses become more involved and informed about plans and developments that affect them. These include issues such as parking, safety concerns, marketing initiatives, urban planning and transportation, development and construction, tourism and economic development. The BIA provides an opportunity for local small businesses to speak with a united voice on issues of common concern and interest. (Courtesy: ByWard Market BIA Website)
